Watts up with Electric Vehicles?

On Tuesday October 24th, Sustainability Initiatives hosted its 2nd annual Electric Vehicle Display in front of the Student Union. Here, Student Government Association, Parking and Transportation Services, and various community members partnered together to bring awareness to sustainable modes of transportation available to students.

The event was initially scheduled to be part of National Drive Electric Week, an annual event that occurs across the country every September. However, the September event was canceled due to Hurricane Irma and rescheduled to be part of Campus Sustainability Month in October.

At the event, partners highlighted the numerous benefits of driving electric vehicles, whether environmental or economic. Students, faculty, and staff had the opportunity to interact with vehicle owners and discuss the continued increases in affordability for these vehicles. Many students were surprised to find out that independent electric vehicle owners had volunteered to display their vehicles and engage with them. They were especially impressed by the fact that these vehicles had two trunks, one in the back and one in the front where the motor usually sits.

The Electric Vehicle roster was as follows:

  • 2012 Tesla Model S
  • 2012 Chevrolet Volt
  • Electric Bicycles

In addition to the electric vehicles, Parking & Transportation Services provided students with information about shuttle services, ZimRide Carpooling, EV Charging Stations and ZipCar, all of which are resources to students at UCF.
